My friend and I did some investigating on my 4WD issue last night, and I think we found the culprit.

This little hose comes from the vacuum ball and when the hood is shut, you can hear a whooshing like air escaping. Turns out, when the hood is shut, the little nozzle pokes out of that rotted hose and causes a vacuum leak. My friend snipped the hose a bit (cut out the dry rotted part and pushed it together) and put it back on and we tested the 4WD in a muddy field. It worked. I could hear that whooshing the other day. It almost sounded like a radiator leak. But, I knew it probably wasn’t since the radiator is new (I replaced it this summer). When the hood was open last night in my friend’s driveway, the 4WD was engaging fine. Then when we shut the hood, it wasn’t. Turns out, the hose was falling open when the hood was closed and letting the nozzle out - creating a vacuum leak.

That is such a GM kind of issue. Oh you’re 4WD isn’t working? Yeah it’s a hose being poked by the hood.

Thankfully hose is dirt cheap at any auto parts place.

When I did the headgaskets on my car, I replaced all vac hoses (maybe I bought a total of 4ft, and I had leftovers)

Yep :)

I bought a box of various size silicone vaccumm hoses on ebay for $15 and a $2 check valve (take pic of the orignal ones orientation to not put it backwards)

S10s are cheap to work on, but some parts fail eariler than they should. My old vacuum hoses fell apart in my hand.

This is usually the culprit when it comes to 4WD issues on S10's, this little vaccum actuator (The thing that looks like a nut with black tubing. I know its not your problem now but for future. They usually fail when the diff has a leak and it can’t maintain vaccum pressure.

I was really, REALLY surprised that it was a mechanical issue, this makes so much more sense to be an issue for an S10.

I’ve said for years, the engine/drivetrains of those things are almost invincible - everything else HOOKED UP to that system is very vulnerable lol

I still don’t know why manufactures feel the need to make thing like a transfer case anything but manual, or at worst, electric solenoid.

Right! I thought the exact same thing. It ran like shit when that came disconnected too.

Yep. My ol’ 4.3 has 169,000 miles on it but still just keeps running. With the recent new spark plugs and wires, it runs really well. It smokes a little when I start it but I’ve heard of this motor doing that for 10-20 years or more. Something about the rings? A little oil seeps out when the motor is shut off and once it’s restarted, that bit of oil burns off real quick.

Yeah the one high-mileage one I had (1988 S10 2 Door 4x4 Blazer) got a full rebuilt at 112k miles so I don’t know that much about that. It had blown head gaskets and we got the truck for almost nothing, then rebuilt the motor. I know the pistons were sloppy as hell in it though, to even get the block clean we had to bore it 60 over just to get the cylinders clean.

The other one was a 04 Blazer 4x4 with the 4.3L Vortec, I owned that from 40k - 101k
